The Padel Club NZ in Papamoa doesn't have the most courts in New Zealand. It doesn't have the newest facility. But by several measures — court utilisation, social media engagement, member retention — it has the most active padel community in the country.
The Model
WhatsApp groups organised by playing level are the engine. Beginners, intermediates, and advanced players each have dedicated groups where games are organised, tips shared, and social events coordinated. It's simple, free, and effective.
Weekly social mixers deliberately blend skill levels. Advanced players are encouraged to play with beginners, not to crush them, but to demonstrate the tactical side of the game. It normalises different abilities playing together and reduces the intimidation factor that can discourage newcomers.
The Numbers
Four courts serving the Bay of Plenty region. Over 150 active players in the WhatsApp groups. Average court utilisation above 70% during operating hours — remarkable for a regional venue. Member retention after first visit: approximately 65%, well above the industry average of 40-45%.
Lessons for Other Clubs
The Papamoa model proves that community building doesn't require expensive technology or complex loyalty programs. WhatsApp groups, consistent social events, and a culture that welcomes all levels create the conditions for organic growth. The sport does the rest.
